Dr. Fida Adely joined the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in the fall of 2007 as an Assistant Professor and as the holder of the Clovis and Hala Salaam Maksoud Chair in Arab Studies.
Dr. Adely received her Ph.D. in Comparative Education and Anthropology from Columbia University, Teachers College and her master degree from Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs. She was previously a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition, she was a Lecturer at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) from 2000-2005 and a core faculty member in the Economic and Political Development Program.
Dr. Adely’s teaching interests include education in the Middle East and North Africa; development in the Arab world and specifically socio-cultural approaches to the study of development; issues related to women and gender in the Arab World; gender and development more broadly; and, Arab society and culture.
Her most recent research has focused on schools, and in particular secondary schooling for girls in Jordan. This work examines the role of schools as both state institutions, and critical social spaces for young women in their struggles to define and make sense of national, religious and gendered identities in Jordan today. Her research interests also include women and development, women and work, gender and education, civic education, and development aid to the Middle East and North Africa. Her publications include "“Is Music Haram?” Jordanian Girls Educating Each Other about Nation, Faith and Gender" in the Teachers College Record and “The Mixed Effects of Schooling for High School Girls in Jordan: The Case of Tel Yahya” in the Comparative Education Review. She is also currently working on an article for publication which analyzes the most recent Arab Human Development Report on Gender, as well as a manuscript based on her research in Jordan.
